New York, 27 JULY 1998 - A 24-year-old computer salesman got both his ears burned when he mistook his iron for the phone - twice.

The man was busy ironing his clothes when the phone rang. Mistaking the iron he was holding as the phone, the absent-minded man held the iron over his ear and answered it, badly burning the left ear.

So, the man made a 999 call to the doctor, again using the iron. He was burned again, this time on the right ear.

"It was a Monday morning, around 10. It was real hectic. I had a major meeting that day, and I had been late. So I quickly ironed my shirt and just then, the phone rang. I was already out of my mind and answered the iron instead."

"The pain was so unbearable that I didn't think of what I was doing. I just dialed 999 and held the iron to my right ear and said "Hello"."
